Whilst not exactly a safari experience which allows you to see wild animals in their natural habitat but a ‘Lion Encounter’. This is an ethically and active conservation program aimed to secure the future for the African Wildlife but at the same time giving us the chance to walk beside these magnificent creatures.
The Lion Encounter is located on the Masuwe Estate, just 10 minutes from Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side. They operate a morning or an afternoon encounter allowing you to interact with 2 or 3 lion cubs, see them learn, explore and play. The special encounters last approx. one and a half hours allowing you to take ample of photos while walking them through the African bush.
Experience this close encounter from either the Zambia or Zimbabwe side of the Victoria Falls, note that you will need a return visa from Zambia side. It makes for a lovely half day trip which includes light refreshments. If you are a wild cat lover, this is a definite highlight to your African Safari.
Lions are predators and although the cubs and lions found at the ‘Lion Encounter” Walk with Lions are raised in captivity, safety is paramount on this activity. the lions do not have leads and the main purpose they are here is for rehabilitation and release into the wild. You will need to be a minimum of 1.5 mt tall, wear neutral coloured clothing without tassels. – trousers and suitable shoes are recommended.
Initially the thought of seeing lions in captivity up close would be just like visiting a Zoo but the Lion Encounter is a genuine lion conservation project. You will learn about the project and plans to release the animals back into the wild ensuring populations for future generations to enjoy. Walking, and maybe even the chance to pat a lion cub is an outstanding, amazing, exhilarating, warm fuzzy experience – possibly one of your safari highlights.
