Gansbaai, a small and pretty fishing village on the southern coast of South Africa, just over 2 hours drive from Cape Town, has made a name for itself as the best place in the world for shark cage diving.
Shark cage diving is growing in popularity and due to the large seal population on the nearby Dyer Island, sharks particularly great whites reside in these waters in extremely high numbers.
Experience the thrill of being underwater surrounded by great white sharks. You may be lucky to see whales, seals and dolphins on the journey too.
If you are wanting to get your adrenaline pumping then shark cage diving should be at the top of your list! Get so close to a great white shark in its environment – feel the power and size from the safety of your cage. Shark diving is well worth the time and effort and a face to face experience with this awesome predator.
Shark diving can be done without having a dive licence or even swimming experience as the cage is attached to the boat at all times (unless this is separately arranged). Due to the cold Atlantic waters a wetsuit will be provided, the water is warmer in winter and this is also the time that sharks hunt for seals around the nearby islands.
Shark diving is an exciting adventure that you will remember forever. It is not compulsory to get into the cage – the viewing decks are brilliant to get those photo opportunities, you will not be disappointed. The journey by boat, the tasty snacks and warm drinks on board will add to the memory.
Shark Dives are coordinated usually between May and October however can be seen all year around. Always chose a professional and licenced charter so both guests and sharks are not harmed thus maintaining a balance in nature. Excellent guides will enlighten you about conservation, ongoing research, marine ecosystems and share their admiration and passion for these incredible creatures.
